Born in São Paulo in 1995, Matheus Mello first came into contact with music through his father, an opera singer and pianist. At the age of 11, he began studying the cello at the São Paulo Conservatory under Meryelle Maciente, then at the São Paulo Orchestra Music Academy with Wilson Sampaio. After winning several prizes, he left Brazil in 2016 to continue his training at the Haute École de Musique de Genève with François Guye and David Pia. When he arrived in Switzerland, his talent was quickly recognised; he won a “Mention” at the Concours d’interpretation musicale de Lausanne in 2017, the first prize of the André-François Marescotti Foundation in 2019, and was supported by foundations such as Wilsdorf, Barbour and Schenkel. He has taken part in masterclasses with renowned cellists such as Sol Gabetta, Peter Wispelwey, Daniel Müller Schott and Natalie Gutman, as well as with Baroque music specialists such as Tom Koopman, Sigiswald Kuijken and the Quatuor Mosaïque.

In 2024, his fascination with Bach led him to specialise in baroque cello with Bruno Cocset.

Mello has performed as principal cello with the Orchestre Sinfonietta de Genève, as cello substitute with the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Bühnen Bern, and has been invited to perform with the Orchestre National Avignon Provence, the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg and Gli Angeli de Genève.

In chamber music, Mello has performed with renowned soloists from the Berlin, Vienna and Munich Philharmonic Orchestras, such as Radek Baborak, Andreas Ottensamer, Wilfred Strehle, Lorenz Nasturica-Herschcowici, Franz Bartolomei and the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Dmitry Rasul-Kareyev and Saya Hashino. Mello is a regular guest at the Grafenegg Festival in Austria.

As a secondary instrument, Mello has been guided by Christophe Sturzenegger (piano), Annemarie Dragos (harpsichord) and Natacha Casagrande (conducting).

Mello plays an Ouvrard 1745 cello that belonged to Philippe Mermoud, a former cello teacher at the Geneva Conservatoire.
